Science & Social Studies

Last week we had the privilege of inviting Scientist Debbie from Scientists in the School, into our classroom to discuss important components of the Pulley and Gears science unit.  Throughout the afternoon students had the opportunity to create a number of pulley systems, gear trains and a human pulley system, while learning important vocabulary and identifying real world examples.

We are currently working on our final task for this unit, which involves creating an elevator system that can lift a small load.  Students have been busy planning, creating and experimenting with science equipment to create the most efficient machine that will use the least amount of force.  Once completed students will plan a sales pitch and will present their invention in the Grade Four Dragon's Den!

We are currently working on our culminating tasks to complete our Habitat and Communities. In the upcoming weeks, students will be completing a research project to showcase their knowledge of material discussed in class, while also developing important research skills.  In our language program, we have been looking closely at summary writing skills and text features that can aid in seeking important information from non-fiction text.  Students have also been introduced to a number of junior-aged Internet search tools that allow access to read-aloud text features, student friendly articles and magazine articles and educational videos.

The grade fours have each been encouraged to select an animal of interest and will work towards identifying various aspects of the animal’s habitat.  Art will also be integrated as students will create a shoebox diorama to showcase various plants, organisms and non-living components that are part of their animal’s habitat.

Projects will be due the week of November 10.  I encourage you to ask your child about their science projects.
