Learning skills
Over the last couple of days, students have been diligently
working on developing personal learning
goals in order strengthen their organizational skills, take responsibility
for their own learning, collaborate with group members and demonstrate
initiative and independence when completing their own work. We will be monitoring and reflecting on these
goals throughout the year and I encourage you to ask your child about the goal
that they have set for the first term.
Language
As part of our language program, students will be participating in a Readers and Writers Workshop, which looks closely at various reading comprehension strategies. Students will be encouraged to think about what they are reading and participate in critical reflection activities aimed to teach children how to respond using oral, media and written forms of communication about their reading choices. Leading up to the first term, we will be looking closely at biographies and research skills to assist students during their upcoming science projects.
Numeracy
Our Grade four students
are starting a mathematics unit on Number
Patterns, which falls under the Patterning
& Algebra Strand of the Ontario Mathematics Curriculum. This branch of mathematics focuses on
encouraging students to understand and produce patterns that are specifically
designed to develop your child’s number sense and algebraic reasoning
skills.
Science
Grade Fours:
Our grade fours will be starting the Habitats
and Communities science unit, which focuses on developing research and
scientific inquiry skills to learn about the habitats of various plants and
animals. Students will learn about the
natural communities that depend on various habitats and the effect various impacts and changes
to habitats can have on interrelationships among plants and animals. Students will eventually complete a research project
Health & Physical Education
As part of our health program, students will be looking
closely at the risks associated with communication technology and will outline
various precautions and strategies for using technology in safe manner. Students
will explore the negative effects cyber bullying has on the self-concept and
emotional well being of others and the preventative steps students can take when
dealing with these types of situations.
In Physical Education students have been participating in a
number of cooperative games that each strive to encourage students to work with
others and develop collaborative skills.
In the upcoming weeks, students will be encouraged to set personal
fitness goals and will participate in a fitness program to develop
cardiovascular fitness and endurance.
Visual Arts and Drama
The Arts will be integrated into various activities and
projects during language and science periods.
Students are currently working on the creation of personalized art
portfolios to house upcoming art assignments. Dance will be taught during the third term of the school year.
